Reactions and GIFs

React to a message with an emoji, add emoji to what you write, and send a GIF, in any conversation.

Sometimes a thumbs up says it all. Reactions let you answer a message without writing a new one, and GIFs and emoji add a little warmth to a conversation when it fits.

React to a message

Right-click a message on a computer, or press and hold it on a phone.

At the top of the menu, choose one of the six quick reactions: 👍 ❤️ 😂 😮 😢 🎉. Emoji you used recently move to the front of this row.

For any other emoji, choose + (More reactions). The full emoji picker opens. It stays open, so you can add several reactions in a row. Tap outside it, or press Escape, to close it.

Your reaction appears as a small pill under the message, for everyone in the conversation. When several people pick the same emoji, the pill shows how many. Hold your pointer over a pill to see who reacted.

You can put several different emoji on the same message, up to 20.

Remove a reaction

Tap your reaction pill again. Choosing the same emoji again from the menu or the picker removes it too.

You cannot react to a deleted message or to a note from Matchai, such as a saved listing or an appointment card.

Add emoji to a message

Select the smiley beside the message box (Emoji and GIFs). The panel opens on the Emoji tab.

Browse by category, or type in Search emoji. Search works in the language you use Matchai in, and ignores accents.

Select an emoji to add it to your message. To close the panel, select Show keyboard, in the same place as the smiley.

  • Recently used, at the top of the picker, holds the emoji you picked last on that device.
  • Change skin tone sets the skin tone for the emoji that have one. Matchai remembers your choice on that device.

Emoji look the same for everyone in the conversation, whatever phone or computer they use.

A message of only emoji

Send one to six emoji on their own, with no text, and they appear larger, without a bubble, like a gesture rather than a sentence. The more emoji, the smaller they get. A single emoji on its own may also animate. Add any text and the message goes back to normal size.

If your device is set to reduce motion, emoji never animate.

Why it works this way

Your clients read these conversations, so emoji stay modest. A single emoji is large enough to read as a gesture, but never so large that it takes over the conversation, and only one emoji on its own moves. A row of moving emoji would pull the eye away from what was actually said.

Send a GIF

Select the smiley beside the message box, then the GIFs tab.

Popular GIFs show first. Type in Search GIFs to find another one. More appear as you scroll.

Select a GIF. It is sent straight away, as its own message.

A GIF has no caption. To say something with it, send a message before or after. If you are replying to a message when you pick a GIF, the GIF is sent as the reply. In your chat list, a conversation whose last message is a GIF shows GIF.

If the tab shows GIFs aren't set up yet, GIFs are not available for now. Emoji and reactions still work as usual.
