Online status and typing
A green dot shows who is online right now, and a typing indicator shows when someone is writing to you. What each one means, and why.
Two small signals tell you whether to wait for an answer or move on: a green dot when someone is online, and a typing indicator when they are writing to you.
The green dot
A green dot beside someone's name means they have Matchai open right now, on one of their devices. You see it:
- at the top of your conversation with them, with a gentle pulse
- on their row in Leads, Clients, Peers and Messages
- beside each member in a team's or a project's member list
- in their details panel
The dot goes away within moments of the person closing Matchai or losing their connection. Someone signed in on a phone and a computer at once shows one dot.
A team or a project has no dot of its own in your list, because a group is not online. Its members are, and the dot appears beside each of them.
No dot does not always mean offline. It also shows nothing when Matchai cannot tell, for example for someone who is not on Matchai yet. A conversation that is blocked shows no dot.
People who use a screen reader hear Online instead of seeing the dot.
Why it works this way
The dot answers one question, "is this person around right now?", and shares nothing else: not where they are, not which device they use, and no "last seen" time. Whenever you have Matchai open, the people who see you in their conversations, teams and projects see your dot too. It is the same signal you get from them, and it helps both of you know when a quick reply is likely.
Typing
When the person in the conversation you have open starts writing to you:
- In the conversation, a bubble with moving dots appears at the bottom, where their message will land. If your device is set to reduce motion, the dots stay still.
- In your list, the conversation's row shows, for example, "Jane is typing…" in place of the last message.
In a team or project chat, the row names who is typing when Matchai knows them. Otherwise it says Someone is typing or Several people are typing.
The indicator goes away a few seconds after they stop typing. You never see yourself typing.
Typing shows for the conversation you have open. If someone starts writing in another conversation, you find out when their message arrives.
Why it works this way
The bubble sits at the bottom of the conversation because that is where you are already looking, and where the message will appear. In your list, it takes the place of the last message rather than adding a line, so the list does not jump each time someone types. And because a closed tab or a dropped connection sends no "stopped typing" signal, the indicator clears itself after a few seconds instead of waiting to be told.
