# Publish and visibility

> Publish a listing, preview a draft, change its web address, mark it as sold, unpublish, archive or delete it.

Source: https://matchai.co/docs/guide/listings/publish-and-visibility

A listing is a draft until you publish it. Publishing puts it on your website and makes it public. You can unpublish, archive and bring it back at any time.

## Before you publish [#before-you-publish]

You need a Matchai Site. Your listings live at your website's address, so a listing cannot be published until you have one. Without a site, **Publish** is unavailable and Matchai points you to **Create site**. See [your Matchai Site](https://matchai.co/docs/guide/online-presence/matchai-site).

Your website must also be published for visitors to see your listings.

## Publish a listing [#publish-a-listing]

<Steps>
<Step>
Open the listing from **Listings**.
</Step>
<Step>
On a computer, press and hold **Publish** until the button fills. It reads **Hold to publish** while you hold it. On a phone, open the menu at the top right and choose **Publish**.
</Step>
<Step>
Matchai confirms: **Listing published! It now appears on your site.**
</Step>
</Steps>

You can also publish from **Listings**: right-click a listing, or press and hold it on a touch screen, then hold **Publish**.

<Callout title="Why it works this way">
Publishing puts a listing in front of the public, under your name. Holding the button for a moment makes it a deliberate choice, so a stray click never publishes a listing that is not ready.
</Callout>

## What publishing does [#what-publishing-does]

- **Your website.** The listing is added to your Matchai Site automatically, at an address such as `jane.matchai.co/bright-condo-in-the-plateau`.
- **Your Matchai Page.** It appears among your listings, newest first. See [your Matchai Page](https://matchai.co/docs/guide/online-presence/matchai-page).
- **Search engines and AI assistants.** They can now find and read it. See [your listings in AI search](https://matchai.co/docs/guide/listings/listings-in-ai-search).
- **Analytics.** Matchai starts counting views. See [listing analytics](https://matchai.co/docs/guide/listings/listing-analytics).

## Preview and share a listing [#preview-and-share-a-listing]

On a computer, the listing's web address sits at the top of the listing page.

- **Preview** opens a draft the way visitors will see it once it is published. Only you and the people who can edit the listing can open it.
- **View** opens the published listing.
- Select the address to copy it.

From **Listings**, right-click a listing and choose **Copy link** or **Share**.

## Change a listing's web address [#change-a-listings-web-address]

<Steps>
<Step>
On a computer, open the listing and choose **Edit**.
</Step>
<Step>
Select the last part of the address at the top of the page and type the new one. Use lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, at least 3 characters.
</Step>
<Step>
Press Enter. Matchai tells you if another of your listings already uses that address.
</Step>
</Steps>

Choose the address before you share the listing widely. Links people already have to the old address stop working once you change it.

## Mark a listing as sold or rented [#mark-a-listing-as-sold-or-rented]

A sold or rented listing stays published, with its status shown on the listing. To change the status:

- **In the listing,** in edit mode, use the status menu above the price, next to the sale or rent menu. A rental offers **Mark as rented**.
- **From Listings,** right-click the listing and hold **Mark as sold**, or **Mark as available** to put it back on the market.

## Unpublish a listing [#unpublish-a-listing]

Open the listing and choose **Unpublish**. The listing goes back to draft and comes off your website and your Matchai Page. Nothing in it is lost, and you can publish it again later.

## Archive a listing [#archive-a-listing]

Archive a listing you are done with but want to keep, such as a past sale.

<Steps>
<Step>
Open the listing, open the menu at the top right of the page, and choose **Archive**.
</Step>
<Step>
Confirm with **Archive**. Archived listings can be restored later.
</Step>
</Steps>

An archived listing is not public. To bring it back, open it and choose **Unarchive**. It returns as a draft, ready to publish again.

## Delete a listing [#delete-a-listing]

Only an archived listing can be deleted. Archive it first, then:

<Steps>
<Step>
Open the archived listing, open the menu at the top right of the page, and choose **Delete**.
</Step>
<Step>
Read the warning and confirm with **Delete**.
</Step>
</Steps>

From **Listings**, open the **Archived** tab, right-click the listing and hold **Delete**.

<Callout type="warn" title="Deleting a listing cannot be undone">
The listing and its page are gone, and there is no way to bring them back. If you might need the listing again, keep it archived instead.
</Callout>

<Callout title="Why it works this way">
Once a listing is deleted, its web address is free: you can give it to another listing straight away, and a new listing with the same title gets the same clean address. An archived listing keeps its address, because you can unarchive it, and it would have nowhere to come back to if another listing had taken it. To reuse an archived listing's address, change that listing's address first.
</Callout>

## Who can publish, archive and delete [#who-can-publish-archive-and-delete]

The owner of a listing and the people they make admins can publish, unpublish, archive and delete it. Team members with view access cannot. See [roles and permissions](https://matchai.co/docs/guide/teams-and-projects/roles-and-permissions).
