# Listings in several languages

> Your listings are translated into English, French and Spanish automatically. Check a translation, write your own wording, or fix the original language.

Source: https://matchai.co/docs/guide/listings/listings-in-several-languages

Write a listing once, in your own language. Matchai translates it into the other two of English, French and Spanish, so visitors read it in their own language. Translations are free.

## The original and its translations [#the-original-and-its-translations]

Every listing has an original language: the one it is written in. When you create a listing, it is the language you use Matchai in. Matchai translates from the original into the other two languages, and keeps the translations up to date as you edit.

Matchai translates the text you write: the title, the description, the highlights, the neighbourhood description and its tags, the room names and notes, the inclusions and exclusions, the disclosures, and the notes on renovations and certifications.

The street address is never translated. A street name is part of how a property is found and registered, so it stays exactly as written in every language.

## Automatic translation [#automatic-translation]

Automatic translation is on for every new account.

<Steps>
<Step>
Open **Settings**, then **Listings**.
</Step>
<Step>
Under **Translation**, tick or untick **Translate my listings automatically**.
</Step>
</Steps>

With it on, every time you change the text of a listing, Matchai updates its translations in the background. Saving never waits for them. With it off, translations change only when you ask, from the listing itself.

<Callout title="Why it works this way">
Automatic translation is on unless you turn it off, because a setting nobody opens might as well not exist. With it on, every listing reaches French, English and Spanish speakers from the day it is published, without you doing anything.
</Callout>

## Check a translation [#check-a-translation]

<Steps>
<Step>
Open the listing from **Listings**.
</Step>
<Step>
Select the translation button at the top of the page, next to **Edit**.
</Step>
<Step>
Under **Show this listing in**, choose a language. The original is marked **Original**.
</Step>
</Steps>

While you are reading a translation, the translation button changes colour and shows the language, such as **FR**, so you always know which version you are editing. Choose the original language again to go back.

## Write your own wording [#write-your-own-wording]

Machine translation is good, but you know your market's words. You can rewrite the title, the description and the neighbourhood description in each language yourself.

<Steps>
<Step>
Show the listing in the language you want to change, as above.
</Step>
<Step>
Choose **Edit** and change the text.
</Step>
</Steps>

Your change applies to that language only. The original stays as it was. Everything else, such as the rooms, is edited in the original language and translated from there.

Matchai never replaces text you wrote yourself. When it updates the translations, it keeps your wording and translates only the rest.

## When a translation is out of date [#when-a-translation-is-out-of-date]

If you change the original and the translations have not caught up, for example because automatic translation is off, a small dot appears on the translation button. Show the listing in that language, open the translation menu, and choose **Update translation**.

## Fix the original language [#fix-the-original-language]

If a listing is marked as written in one language but is really written in another, the translations cannot work. Tell Matchai which language it is in.

<Steps>
<Step>
Open the listing and choose **Edit**.
</Step>
<Step>
Open the translation menu. At the bottom, select the line that says which language the listing is written in, such as **Written in English**.
</Step>
<Step>
Choose the right language.
</Step>
<Step>
Read the message, then choose **Change and translate again**.
</Step>
</Steps>

<Callout type="warn" title="Changing the original language redoes every translation">
Every existing translation of the listing is discarded and made again from the original, including any wording you wrote yourself.
</Callout>

<Callout title="Why it works this way">
Matchai translates from the language it believes the listing is written in. If a French listing is marked as English, the translator is asked to translate French "from English" and hands it back unchanged, and the French version can never be made. Correcting the original language fixes the source, so the old translations, made from the wrong one, have to go.
